On Saturday Jan. 7, 2017, the Berkeley Buccaneers faced off against the Tampa Prep Terrapins on Berkeley’s campus for the annual Headmasters’ Challenge. Winter athletes from Middle Division to Upper Division junior varsity and varsity to compete for their school to earn enough wins to hold onto the Headmasters’ Trophy. Berkeley came out on top with 15.5 points to Tampa Prep’s 5.5. This win is Berkeley’s fifth consecutive win, counting the tie in 2014.

  • THE PERFECT COMEBACK: As Klaas van de Groep ‘22 and his Terrapin opponent wrestled, it was not clear what the outcome might be but after a few minutes on the edges of their seats, fans cheered for yet another Berkeley victory. Van de Groep’s win helped Berkeley’s Middle Division wrestling team clinch a 25-13 victory.

  • BERKELEY TAKES DOWN TERPS: Landon Padgett ‘17 took down a Tampa Prep wrestler in a matter of seconds Saturday morning in the Straz. Padgett’s victory contributed to Berkeley’s 52-5 win for varsity wrestling.

  • BUCS DEFEND CUP AT ALL COST: Gigi Novello ’19 (number 21) swept the ball from Tampa Prep offense Saturday morning at JV Girls’ soccer game. Novello returned to JV this year and has been playing the sport since her days in Berkeley’s Middle Division.

  • GIRLS BASKETBALL WAS NAIL-BITER: The Varsity Girls’ Basketball team had fans sitting on the edge of their seats, cheering the Bucs into overtime. In a matter of minutes, the crowd intensified and cheers of encouragement (from both teams) could be heard from the Straz Center parking lot. Despite the cheers, the girls lost by one point.

  • TERPS AND BUCS TAKE A BREAK: The Berkeley Armada and Tampa Prep fans recharged at the Berkeley Café. The Café provided hot dogs, chicken sandwiches, salads, burgers, beverages, cookies and burgers all for free for all Headmasters’ attendees.

  • BBN KEEPS FANS UPDATED: The Berkeley Broadcasting Network brought accurate and informative updates to fans across campus. Leana Fraifer ’20 and Raj Ghanekar ’20 are shown manning the board. Live coverage aired in the Cafe and was viewed by dozens of students, parents and teachers as they passed through. The BBN’s coverage can be found on Berkeley’s website.

  • YOUNG ARMADA BRINGS SPIRIT: Jake Pithers ’23 celebrates Ross Miller’s ‘21 game-saving free throw with fellow Middle Division students. The young Bucs used face paint, pom-poms and cheers to spread spirit during Saturday’s heated competitions.

  • TERPS CHEER EACH OTHER ON: Boys’ Varsity Basketball played an intense game Saturday afternoon. As each team scored, one thing was clear: the players were there for their teammates.

  • THE ULTIMATE FACE OFF: Davis Koetter ’17 (number 10) kept his eyes on the ball during Saturday’s big game. Though Koetter’s athleticism earned his team points, the Varsity Boys’ Basketball team lost by ten points.

  • CLOCK WINDS DOWN: Members of the Armada stood frozen during the final agonizing moments leading up to the Boys’ Varsity Basketball team’s defeat. Despite this loss, fans continued to cheer on the team and belted out the Alma Mater.

  • WEATHER WON’T STOP SPIRIT: Excited Tampa Prep fans wore weather-proof red and yellow outfits as they chanted and cheered along with their spirit leader during the Boys’ Varsity Basketball game. Some Terrapins were unaffected by the rain and decided to sport body paint.

  • CHEERFUL CHEERLEADERS: The Middle Division Cheerleaders squad, led by veteran cheerleading coach Jana Kent, helped bring spirit and cheer to the Armada at the Middle Division boys’ basketball games.

  • BEAUTIFUL ANTHEM AT BIG GAME: The Boys’ Varsity basketball game typically brings in a mammoth crowd of Terrapins and Bucs. This year’s crowd did not disappoint and neither did the performers of the National Anthem. The Upper Division and Middle Division concert bands accompanied both schools in singing.

  • HOME FOR THE CUP: (from left) Kyle Kelly ’16, Declan Farmer ’16 and Madison Jenkins ’16 took a break from college to visit Berkeley and watch the Headmasters’ Challenge unfold. All were athletes at their time at Berkeley but Farmer earned a gold medal in ice sledge hockey at the 2014 Paralympics.

  • MD CHEER WOWS AT HEADMASTERS: Under the wing of Coach Kent, the Middle Division cheerleading team led the Berkeley Armada in cheers and chants, in addition to performing a choreographed routine.

  • MUSICAL BUCCANEERS: (from left) For every game played during Saturday’s Headmasters’ Challenge, an equally impressive rendition of the National Anthem was played. Seen here are Upper Division band members Bryson Forsmans ’20, Samantha Tun ’17 and Jalen Li ’19.

  • EARNING THE HEADMASTERS’ CUP: As Berkeley’s Headmaster Joseph Seivold accepted the Headmasters’ Trophy for the 5th consecutive year, members of the Armada cheered in appreciation of the hardworking athletes and coaches that made keeping the cup possible.

  • HEADMASTER SEIVOLD KEEPS CUP: Beginning at 8:00 AM and ending at 2:30 PM, Saturday’s Headmasters’ Challenge was a game changer. This victory marks the 5th consecutive win (and longest winning streak in Headmasters’ history) for Berkeley.
