New Andy Warhol Exhibit Pops at Dalí Museum

Saturdays in downtown St. Petersburg are always bustling with people taking advantage of the many activities offered, such as the Saturday Morning Market, shops, restaurants and most recently, the new Andy Warhol exhibit at the Dalí Museum. The collection features some of Warhol’s most famous works such as the classic Campbell’s Soup Cans paintings and various photographs, all centered on the themes of fame and mortality.

The exhibit starts off with screen prints based off the theme of fame, with celebrities posing for the camera and even Warhol himself sitting for photographs. In one corner a projector plays a myriad of Warhol’s screen tests featuring celebrities and artists who made their way to Warhol’s loft in New York City during the ‘70s and ‘80s. You can even sit for your very own screen test which will come out similar to Warhol’s.

Next come Warhol’s paintings and screen prints. The colors explode from screen prints of Campbell’s soup cans and the Mona Lisa. And finally, the exhibit ends with Warhol’s graphite prints, pencil on paper works, which depict dollar bills.

Though Salvador Dalí and Andy Warhol may seem to have different styles, during the 1960s they were some of the most well-known artists in the world. “They were constantly borrowing ideas from each other” says Philip Rankin, a curator at the Dalí Museum. In fact, Warhol and Dalí had actually met on more than one occasion and the Warhol exhibit even features a photograph of the two art icons shaking hands.

Rankin also says his favorite piece is the set of Jackie Kennedy screen prints titled Jackie. “Some were taken before her husband’s shooting and some were taken after, and that story has a lot of […] symbolism behind it” he says of the bright blue pieces. Indeed, the piece captured not only Jackie Kennedy’s attitude before and after the assassination of the president but the country’s outlook too.

Tickets for the exhibit range from $5 (child) to $15 (student) to $21 (adult). Hours are from 10 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. and the museum is open late on Thursdays until 8 p.m. with a special admission of $10. The ticket prices include a 20 minute lecture on Warhol and a scavenger hunt through the exhibits. The Warhol exhibition will leave April 27th and return to its home at the Warhol Museum in Pittsburgh. The exhibit won’t return for a while so make sure to head to the Dalí Museum in order to get a unique look at one of history’s most influential artists.
