Diversity Club Increases Student Involvement

Many people have probably noticed the increasing presence of Diversity Club on the Berkeley campus through the many thought-provoking videos and convo announcements. This year, members hope to raise awareness for the many diverse social groups on campus and around the world. With Mrs. Ortega as their sponsor, club members and other students gather in room 253 during lunch every Friday.

One of the unique things about Berkeley’s Diversity Club is that club members decide what topics are discussed. Students are able to present topics to discuss during club meetings by posting on the Diversity Club Facebook page and members are encouraged to voice their opinions and ideas no matter how controversial they may seem. Diversity club also brings their ideas to the entire high school student body by presenting videos in convo. The topics of the videos are always open for discussion for others to share their opinion on the subject.

Thanks to the leadership of upperclassmen like juniors Brie Nicker and Larry Glanton, and senior presidents Tiggy Jalloh, Dori Goodman, and Colette Spieler (and many others) there is always a welcoming and positive vibe as members participate in fun activities that create group camaraderie. The upperclassmen lead by example, never being afraid to express their opinions on any subject, while also being respectful of each student’s viewpoint..

Some of the topics already discussed in the club this year have been general racial stereotyping and media’s portrayal on women and men.. Most of these ideas have been proposed by the Diversity Club’s members.

The Diversity Club is also teaming up with Global Scholars heading the theme “If the World Were a Village” this year in the hopes of making the entire student body more “globally aware” and hopefully, with this, along with other new initiatives, the Diversity Club will make a positive difference on campus.
