Deke Sharon’s Visit Hits the Right Note
From the moment he walked up on stage during convocation today, Deke Sharon energized the students at Berkeley and had a one of-a-kind presentation showing off his superb a capella skills. He taught the students how to sound like a trumpet, a trombone, a violin, and even showed them how to beat box. Using his unique skills and powerful knowledge of music, he captivated the audience and thoroughly entertained everyone in attendance. However, his captivating presentation was not without an important message. He urged everyone to follow his or her passion. His own passion and love for a capella enabled him to become a pioneer in modern a capella music and “the father of modern a capella.”
Although the entire Berkeley community was exposed to Sharon’s exceptional skill, the high school Mello Divas were able to work with him and showcase their talents as well. One member of the Mello Divas, Sophia Raterman, Class of 2016, said that the experience was unique and inspirational because Sharon could relate his own high school a capella experiences with those of the Mello Divas. She also explained that Sharon was one of the founding members of the competitions that they have participated in.
Even though Deke Sharon’s visit to Berkeley was short, he provided all the students with a memorable experience and shared a message about the importance of pursuing your passions.
