Rebecca Merritt is the newest Advanced Placement European History teacher. Merritt was born in New Jersey, and she attended University of Delaware for her undergraduate degree and Delaware Law for law school. She chose this particular university because it was both out of state but close to home, so she could visit her family during holidays. She chose to teach history because she loved learning about it and enjoys being able to teach different perspectives.
Merritt taught social studies in Mexico for five years in a fully bilingual school. She then taught Advanced Placement Government and Economics and United States History at Tampa Catholic High School in Tampa for nine years, which she enjoyed. She decided to come over to Berkeley Preparatory School because she wanted to teach a more focused and dedicated student body. She is excited to teach European History now because, in her own words, “I think history is living and breathing, and so all aspects of it are interesting to me…And so I find that every time you study history again, you see it from yet another perspective.”
Her favorite thing about Berkeley is the community of supportive teachers and the shared time in the Cafe during lunch that allows her to meet different administrators and teachers whom she might not have met otherwise. Outside of teaching, she loves to walk her two Pitbulls and garden. Merritt is excited to teach at Berkeley and appreciates the community.
